IBC – Social identity, subjective well-being and human behaviour

Rafael Serrano-del-Rosal is Full Professor at the Institute for Advanced Social Studies – Spanish National Research Council and Doctor of Political Science and Sociology (University of Granada, 1999). In 2017, he took over as Director of the Institute for Advanced Social Studies where he also heads one of the research groups – Social Identity, Subjective Welfare and Behaviour (IBC).

At the onset of his career, Rafael’s interests were mainly centred on collective action and the representation of interests in contemporary democracies, in particular what is traditionally known as vertical trade unions. Nevertheless, since approximately twenty years ago and following his doctorate, his research has focused on the convergence of three research areas: 1) design, analysis and comprehensive assessment of public policies (mainly related to health and provision of healthcare services), 2) subjective welfare and satisfaction, and 3) sociology of health.

He is currently involved in a research program, together with his colleagues in the Social Identity, Subjective Welfare and Human Behaviour research group, on the broad and complex issue of the social dimension of health, within the framework of which two lines of research are being developed. One, on the social dimension of pain, and another, on the end-of-life process and more specifically on what have come to be called “exit rights.”

He was a member and adviser to the Commission of Humanities and Social Sciences at the National Research Council between 2006 and 2012. He was a founding member and Vice-president of the Andalusian Association of Sociology (integrated in the Spanish Federation of Sociology since 2009) between 2008 and 2012. He was Elected Member of the Federal Assembly of the Spanish Federation of Sociology between 2018 and 2022, and  president or vice president the End-of-Life Research Network (Red_EoL) since 2014. He is member of the Editorial Board of the Revista Internacional de Sociología and regular reviewer for national and international journals. He frequently lectures on masters programmes and expert training courses related to his research interests at the University of Jaen, the National Distance Education University (UNED), the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Pablo de Olavide University of Seville, Málaga University, the International University of Andalusia, as well as specialist institutions such as the Andalusian School of Public Health or the Deusto Business School.
