DEMOCRETS – Governance, collective action and political participation: challenges of contemporary democracy

Tenured Scientist of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Institute for Advanced Social Studies (IESA) in Cordoba (Spain). He was an associate professor at the Arab Studies Area of the University of Cordoba (2000-02) and postdoctoral visiting scholar at the Institut de Recherches et d’Études sur le Monde Arabe et Musulman (IREMAM-CNRS, France) (2004).

Since 2017, he is the Secretary-Editor of the journal “Revista Internacional de Sociología” (RIS).

His research interests are about four main topics in the area studies of North African countries:

political processes (Political regimes/ political parties/ elections/ representation);
Contentious Politics, Political opposition and Dissidents;
civil society (voluntary associations/ advocacy organizations/ identity, cultural and social movements: human rights, women, amazigh, islamism);
Mobilizations, political and social participation and representation of youth and women (institutional innovations: quotas; advisory and independent bodies).

He has been principal investigator of several Spanish state-funded interdisciplinary research projects on these topics from 2006 to these days. The latter, ended in 2018, dealt with political and social participation of young people in the Maghreb countries. He is now leading a new project about Protests and Crisis of political representation in North Africa.

He has been the co-editor or the author of four books and six journal special issues, including:

– “Participation, association-building and dissent in North Africa: the various dimensions of youth activism, from the fall of Ben Ali to the revolt against Bouteflika (2011–2019) (special issue Journal of North African Studies, 2019. ed. with M. Garcia de Paredes);

– “Quand l’Algérie proteste. Le Maghreb au prisme du hirak algérien » (special issue L’Année du Maghreb, 2019, december, with E. Gobe) ;

– “Political and civic participation of young people in North Africa: behaviours, discourses and opinions” (special issue Revista de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos 2019. ed. with García de Paredes);

– “Les revendication amazighes dans la tourmente des “printemps arabes” (collective book 2017, ed. with M. Tilmatine).

– “Mohamed VI. Política y cambio social en Marruecos” (book 2011, ed. con M. Hernando de Larramendi).

He has published nearly 100 academic papers in English, French and Spanish in books and journals of Social Sciences and Political Science such as Current Sociology, Gender Studies, Journal of North African Studies, Mediterranean Politics, L’Année du Maghreb, Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée, Revista de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos, Journal of Modern African Studies, etc.
